Alecrim: the herb of memory and clear heads
Rosemary, Rosmarinus officinalis, is a coastal Mediterranean shrub — the name means “dew of the sea” — that has followed human settlement for so long it now grows wild across half the world. It sits in the kitchen and in the ritual cabinet with equal ease.
Burned, it gives a bright resinous-herbal smoke with a distinct pine and camphor edge. It is sharper than lemongrass and cleaner than sage, and it reads as alert rather than calming.
The classical association is with memory and mental clarity, which is why rosemary has been carried at funerals, worn at weddings and burned in study rooms for a very long time.
