Benjoim: the warm resin of temples and long rituals
Benzoin is the aromatic resin drawn from the bark of Styrax benzoin, a tree of Southeast Asia that reached the Americas through centuries of trade in incense and perfume. When the bark is wounded, the tree seals itself with a balsam that hardens into amber-coloured tears — this is the raw material the Fênix workshop grinds into its blend.
The aroma is sweet, resinous and slightly vanillic, closer to warm balsam than to flowers. It is a heavy, lingering smoke that settles into fabric and wood, which is why benzoin has been burned for so long in temples, churches and ceremonial rooms where the scent is meant to stay after the ritual ends.
In the Brazilian tradition it is one of the classic resins for preparing a room before prayer or meditation — a base note that holds the space rather than calling attention to itself.
Notes
- Aroma: sweet, balsamic, vanilla-like — deep and enveloping
- Character: a base note; grounding rather than bright
- Traditional use: preparing ceremonial and prayer spaces
- Pairs with: olibanum and white sage for a fuller temple blend
A good choice when you want the room to feel settled and warm, and for the scent to remain long after the stick has burned down.
